What Is THCA Isolate?

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, or THCA, is a non-psychoactive compound found in raw cannabis flowers and extracts. This is the only cannabinoid that can convert into the most famous psychoactive molecule in cannabis, THC.

This cannabinoid offers promising benefits in its inactive form for the treatment of a number of degenerative diseases and managing pain. But be careful, when converted into THC this cannabinoid packs a mean punch!

THCA isolate is an odorless, flavorless powder or crystalline material, void of terpenes and other compounds found in cannabis extracts. In its inactive form, THCA is not only non-psychoactive but it also is an incredible anti-inflammatory aid.

When exposed to heat or intense UVB light, THCA decarboxylates into its active form, THC. When converted, this form of THC isolate is the most pure form of THC in the world, testing between 95-100%.

Most cannabis distillate tests between 85-98% THC, which is extremely potent, however that extra few percent points found in THC isolate make a significant difference. This is one of the most psychoactive cannabis products available.

How THCA Isolate Is Made

THCA can be found both in nature and the lab – however creating THCA in isolate form requires advanced laboratory techniques and safety materials. You can theoretically get THCA directly from the raw cannabis flower, but purified forms must be extracted.

Naturally Occurring THCA

In the living plant, THCA is developed in the blooming stage of the cannabis plant’s life. Cannabigerolic acid (CBDa) develops inside the trichomes of the plant, which then converts into THCA and all of the other known cannabinoids via enzymatic processes.

Though found in abundance in the raw plant oils, THCA is often mixed in with a blend of other major and minor cannabinoids. Producing THCA isolate requires a number of extraction techniques to purify this one compound.

isolated effects of CBDA, as THCA has the potential to skew test results as they require spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques to distinguish between the two compounds, and separation of the two compounds was challenging.

It can currently be presumed that CBDA will have a combined effect similar to THCA and CBD in anti-inflammatory effects.

Manufactured THCA Isolate

The resin material must undergo a mechanical extraction process, stripping the extract of terpenes and other plant compounds to leave behind only THCA.

Hydrocarbon extraction using butane or other solvents is one of the most efficient ways to isolate THCA. This can be done using a closed-loop extraction machine, washing the cannabis in the solvent to remove all plant matter and impurities. A final vacuum purge is necessary to remove all residual solvent, and is done using vacuum pressure and low temperatures.

After the solvent has been evaporated, the purified resin is placed into containers and is left to grow crystals out of the highly concentrated extract. This process can take roughly 2-3 weeks, and can even be prompted by a pure seed crystal of THCA. Crystal material will begin to form on the bottom of the container, leaving an oily rich layer of terpenes and other plant oils on the surface.

Once the crystal growing is complete, the isolate can then be separated from the liquid terpenes through a low temperature purging technique. Some manufacturers will reintroduce the liquid terpenes into the crystal THCA as “sauce & diamonds” or each may be distributed separately.

An extra step of Chromatography can be added at the end to remove any final unwanted compounds, this is particularly useful for removing plant pigment from the isolate.

What Are The Benefits of THCA Powder?

For the average person, THCA could be a great option for relief from inflammation or treating an upset stomach, but for those suffering from chronic illness THCA could be a way to significantly improve quality of life.

THCA has been found to work as an effective neuroprotectant, making it a promising candidate for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

The cannabinoid was observed to have moderate-quality evidence to support the use of THCA for treating chronic pain and spasticity – two debilitating symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases.

Further evidence showed that THCA may also have a minor beneficial impact on appetite and may even improve nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, sleep disorders, Tourette syndrome, and some eating disorders.

Researchers even suggest that THCA may be a more potent alternative to THC when treating nausea and vomiting symptoms.

THCA may also offer benefits to cancer patients, as research shows THCA slows the proliferation of cancerous cells. Similar to CBD and THC, it is possible that THCA aids in the death of certain types of cancer cells, however most studies have been conducted only in cell studies.

Further clinical research is needed to confirm its use in cancer treatment. At this time, cannabinoids have been shown to be safe for treating cancer, but in no way control or cure the disease.

Risks of THCA

In its raw form, THCA does not come with any major dangers or side effects. It is possible in some cases that THCA can irritate your eyes or skin, as this is part of the plant’s natural defense system against predatory animals. This is less common in humans and can be treated by simply flushing the area clean.

THCA isolate only poses a risk when it is converted into highly potent THC. Though it is theoretically impossible to consume a lethal dose of THC, it is still very possible to overdose. A THC overdose may cause an elevated heart rate, nausea, dizziness, and intense psychoactive effects. These symptoms will go away with time, but it is possible to reduce the unwanted side effects by staying hydrated, eating complex carbs or sugar, and taking a counter-dose of CBD to partially block the nervous system’s uptake of THC.

To avoid any unwanted THC conversion, it is recommended to keep your THCA isolate in a cool, dry, dark space away from direct sunlight.

Additionally, THCA is used as a target analyte for a number of different drug tests. Despite the fact THCA is not psychoactive, it could still produce a positive test result when testing the body for cannabis. It is best to avoid THCA if you are concerned with passing a standard drug test.
